I want to be ReefWALK Guide!!!

ReefWALK guides are all VOLUNTEERS, and so are all our trainers. We have volunteers from all walks of life business executives, teachers, biologists, Arts graduates, researchers, I.T. specialists You do not need a degree in marine biology to be a guide, just attend all our training sessions and you'll be well-equipped to go.

Pre-requisites:
1. PUNCTUALITY

ReefWALK guides are expected to be at least 30min early for public guided walks, and extremely punctual for our training sessions.

This is especially since our outdoor sessions depend on the level of tides, and tides, as you know, wait for no man. Trainers have also taken time off from their busy schedules to be there for you, and visitors have come a long way just to attend a ReefWALK, so please dont keep them waiting!

2. COMMITMENT

We provide free training by marine biologists and experienced ReefWALK guides, and in return, we expect you to guide at least 4 public walks a year.

Each guide needs substantial financial support to be trained (each boat to Kusu Island costs us about $160), and many free hours from our trainers, so please consider carefully whether you can commit to the guiding sessions before you sign up.

3. PASSION

If you do not have the passion for sharing about marine life and nature conservation with others, you will not be able to grasp the joy of being a ReefWALk guide. It is with passion and dedication that all of the above and more will simply fall in place.

As a volunteer guide, you get to learn more about marine life and conservation, and share this knowledge with visitors. You will also get to meet other dedicated and fun Blue Water Volunteers who share your passion for all things blue and in between!

Training requirements:

  • You are required to complete at least 6 training sessions, including 2 theory and 4 practical sessions within SIX months. The last practical session may be your rehearsal or examination, before you do your graduation by guiding during a public ReefWalk (you may team up with another graduating guide).

  • The above-mentioned training and all guiding sessions are free, as the BWV will cover most of the logistics expenses (mainly for boat to Kusu Island). However, should you need more sessions, or take more than SIX months to complete the training; you shall pay for the subsequent training sessions (the cost will be determined by the respective co-ordinator).

  • You just need to pay $50 as training fee, which includes a symbolic $15 boat ride and a $35 deposit which will be returned upon completion of your first 4 ReefWalk guiding sessions.
Upon graduation, you are expected to guide at least 4 ReefWalk sessions each year, including weekdays, weekends and public holidays. After the first 4 sessions, you will be eligible to receive honorarium for guiding.

  • You are required to actively communicate with the co-ordinators. A NO-reply will be very much appreciated if you are not able to make it for any session. Any guide/trainee who disappear (MIA) for more than SIX months without any reason or without properly informing the co-ordinator will be removed from the list. He/She will lose all privileges as a guide and will need to participate in training again if he/she wishes to rejoin.

Two main theory sessions are to be held yearly, and focus on the common marine life at Kusu Island and the guiding technique. Special theory sessions may be organised as enhancement for current guides/trainees, e.g. specific on certain group of flora and fauna. On-job-training (OJT) are conducted concurrently with public ReefWalk at Kusu Island, where on-job-trainees will assist and learn from an experienced lead guide. Field trainings are non-ReefWalk training sessions held at Kusu Island, Sentosa or Labrador beach during suitable low tide (sometimes at pre-dawn hours) and these will mainly be on flora and fauna identification and familiarisation with inter-tidal habitat.
